MEMORIES FROM THE CLASS OF '49

Following are excerpts from the ISU Alumni Association's 50-year reunion booklet.

Darrell G. Ashley, BSEngr, South Holland, Illinois: Big band dances; ice skating on Lake Laverne.

John Stephen Baer, BSME, Bar Harbor, Michigan: We would save all week for a Friday night splurge at the “Maid Rite” in downtown Ames or a glass of beer with fellow students at a tavern near the railroad tracks. I used to get my hair cut for 35 cents at Jim Shipley’s Barber Shop on West Street and Hyland Avenue.

Jack Berka, BSEngr, Bel Air, Maryland: I won’t forget the Iowa State Daily and Ballyrot, which informed us of Harry and Ed, the two ducks whose circular flight path “blinked” the WOI tower lights; The Green Gander—I can still recall or joke or two.

Bill Binger, BSME, Ames, Iowa: Living in West Court; we were all in the same boat—G.I. Bill, having kids, trying to make ends meet.

Carl Blomgren, BSCE, Overland Park, Kansas: I visited Dean Anson Marston’s residence and the famous dean showed me plans he was working on for the Panama Canal Company.
I remember studying late and walking to “Dogtown” for a five-cent sack of popcorn.

Harold John Boehm, BSEngr, Sigourney, Iowa: Enjoyed watching Professor Allen do his oddies with his suspenders in his math classes without dropping his drawers.

Roger E. DeValois, BSME, Loveland, Colorado: I particularly remember Duke Ellington playing for our ball.

Kent G. Drummond, BSCE, Bozeman, Montana: Civil engineering summer camp with Al Wind, Al Herron, Bill Bredar, and Professor Jack Dodds.

Jack H. Folsom, BSAeroE, Green Valley, Arizona: We were thankful for the housing we were furnished in Pammel Court; we remember the close railroad tracks, the pot-bellied stove and coal brickettes, and snow blowing in around the edges during winter storms. We made many friends in Pammel Court and several went on to work at Boeing.

Archer Mohr, BSEE, Dallas, Pennsylvania: Still remember Professor Clatterbaugh’s “grading philosophy”—knowing as much about EE as he did was worth a B and knowing more was worth an A.

Archie J. Murrish, BSChE, Portage, Michigan: Enjoyed listening to Doc Sweeney—recall his advice to not use preachers or teachers as references on job applications and to avoid wearing jewelry; wonder if Harry and Ed are still flying around the red light on the WOI radio tower.

Robert M. Peart, BSAgE, Gainesville, Florida: Remember the rigorous, hated, and very useful courses in T&AM that all engineers had to take—formed a link between all Iowa State engineers of that era.

Robert S. Reed, BSME, Daytona Beach, Florida: VEISHEA ’48—my head was one of several used as human bumpers in a large pinball machine!

Volney Smith, BSAgE, West Des Moines, Iowa: Drake students painting the Four Seasons fountain at the Union red—we retaliated by whomping them at their Homecoming; Ezio Pinza and Eleanor Roosevelt visits to campus; Miss Hittle, the dietician at Friley Hall, limiting each person to one milk and trying to outfox her and getting two milks.

Tendon Wakeley, BSAeroE, Bellevue, Washington: A highlight was the test flight in the college Ercoupe with Professor Sanford to collect data for the flight test course in Aero E.

Robert Boyd Worth, BSEE, Des Moines, Iowa: Attending basketball games in State Gym; mailing laundry home in special mailing box; graduating class ceremony held in the Armory on a hot summer night.
