From the Dean
With this issue of Muses, we are paying tribute to our past with a look at the accomplishments of a former graduate student, a special collection of alumni memories, and an historical snapshot of Marston Hall and other college landmarks. This retrospective conveys the solid foundation of excellence that our college established more than 100 years ago and continues to build upon.
The College of Engineering has a long, rich history at Iowa State University. That history began with a graduating class of six engineers in 1872 and encompasses more than 30,000 living alumni. The first faculty members, who guided students in the study of mechanical arts, have led to our newest professors working with synthetic environments. An original division of the nations first land-grant college is today one of the nations largest engineering schools. These many parts of the college have made it exceptional since its very beginnings.
Throughout history, one of our greatest sources of pride has been the innovative and visionary leadership of our graduates. Our alumni have attained success not only as engineers but also as corporate leaders, professors, inventors, attorneys, and medical doctors. Today, many of our students achieve prominence even before they earn their degrees. Id like to share just a few examples.
Ben Golding, BSConE01, is the next president of the Government of the Study Body. He and Kim Tholen, ME00, have each received the 2000 Deans Leadership Award for their work in college, university, community, and professional organizations. Kim is also a recipient of the Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award. Brynne Kriegermeier, MSE00, has been named an undergraduate research scholar and associate member of Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society. Kim Knuth, ChE03 has been elected regional chair of the National Association of Engineering Student Councils.
We are proud of the achievements of our current students, we respect the success of our alumni, and we are grateful to the people who laid the groundwork for our college. This issue celebrates some of our achievements. I hope you are as inspired as I am by the accomplishments described within these pages.
