The world changes.Markets, technologies, industry and business, the profession of engineering itselfall of these are continually in flux, constantly changing. Therefore we too must change, not only to meet challenges of the outside world, but to be the positive cause of change as well. Im happy to announce some very positive changes for the College of Engineering, moves I believe will truly help us in our Reach for the Top campaign to become one of the nations top 20 engineering schools. First, I have named three new department chairs. Tom Shih will head aerospace engineering; Arun Somani, electrical and computer engineering; and Judy Vance, mechanical engineering. The chairs will assume their new duties July 1. Profiles of these new leaders will appear on the engineering Web site (www.eng.iastate.edu) over the summer months. Two of these names should be familiar to you. Arun and Judy have been faculty members for several years. Arun began his academic career at the University of Washington in 1985 and has been at Iowa State since 1997. He holds the Jerry R. Junkins Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering and was previously the departments Nicholas Professor. Judy received her bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees here. She has been a full-time faculty member since 1987 and was recently promoted to the rank of full professor. Tom Shih comes to our college from Michigan State University, where he held a joint appointment in mechanical engineering and electrical and computer engineering. During the 1990s he served summers on the faculties of both the NASA Ames and NASA Lewis Research Centers. He has also taught at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Florida. Next, we have changed the names of two of our departments. Aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics will now be known as the Department of Aerospace Engineering (AerE). The former civil and construction engineering department now will be the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE). We believe these new names better reflect evolving departmental emphases and priorities. Finally, the next time you visit the college youll notice another big change for the better: Hoover Hall will be completed this fall and dedicated in October. Fittingly enough, Hoover lies immediately at the foot of Marston water towerthe constant symbol of your College of Engineerings unchanging dedication to excellence in engineering education.
