And so it comes to this: after hundreds of columns, speeches, and other messages over the past nine years, this is my last to you as dean of the College of Engineering.

It’s been a tremendous honor serving as dean. But I get even more satisfaction simply being, like many of you, an Iowa State engineer—a satisfaction made all the greater knowing that, unlike dean, professor, or any other hat I’ve worn since leaving here in 1960, I will always be an alumnus of this wonderful place.

University leaders were pleased but hardly surprised when, shortly after being named Iowa State’s new dean of engineering, James L. Melsa was appointed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to serve as an examiner for the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. It only confirmed what Iowa State already knew: Jim Melsa had spent a lifetime holding engineering practice and education to the highest standards of excellence possible and would bring this same drive and discernment to lead his alma mater into the 21st century.
