The story of Iowa State's involvement in the fastest growing foundation company in the world began with a student, an idea, and a relationship.Again this year alumni of the College of Engineering have demonstrated their extreme generosity and dedication to Iowa State University. Thank you for your continued support of the college, its programs, faculty, and students. We are honored by your generous gifts and committed to putting them to good use. This has been a year of great accomplishment for the college. With the dedication of Hoover Hall, the ETRC is officially completed. We've added two new labs, accepted the largest in-kind gift in university history, and raised private gift support for our highest priority-the renovation and expansion of Coover Hall. In addition, thanks to the careful management of the engineering endowment by the ISU Foundation, the college was able to offer 1,007 scholarships, averaging $1,845. These scholarships totaled approximately $2 million in support to our best and most-deserving students.Overall, this year the college spent $7,377,065 in gifts and earnings on endowments. Those dollars were used to fund undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, endowed faculty chairs, programmatic support, and facility upgrades. This year also brought changes to our staff. Carla Wiedmier and Sallie Grace Tate were hired to fill two vacancies; both are excellent additions to our team. Carla will work with the Department of Chemical Engineering and the recently re-named Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering. Sallie Grace will focus on the Departments of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Systems, Aerospace, and Materials Science Engineering. I will continue my efforts with the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. During 2003-04, we expect to complete the fundraising campaign for Coover Hall and to transition much more of our efforts into the departmental needs for endowed chairs, graduate fellowships, and undergraduate scholarships. These goals are consistent with the college's strategic plan entitled Reach for the Top. As you review the charts on this page, you will see that overall giving to the college has been down this year. The university as a whole and other charitable organizations report similar experiences. As you can imagine, the economy, terrorism, and war have had a significant impact on the support of our alumni and our corporate partners. Many of your employers may also be experiencing challenging times; many of you have probably seen decreases in your investments during this economic downturn. The good news, however, is that the overall economic picture is getting brighter. We are confident that as the economy improves, so will our gifts. If you have any questions or would like more information on what we are doing, please do not hesitate to call me. Thanks again for your generous support of the college. ![]() Keith Fortmann Executive Director |
