1930s Harold Wilfred Wulke, BSGenEng‘36, Los Altos, California, passed away on November 3, 2004. He had taught math and science for 28 years and continued to teach after his retirement through his activities in AARP Vote, the Gray Panthers, Vets for Peace, the World Federalists, and as a board member of the Disabled Resources Center. 1940s Daniel J. Watkins, BSCE’47, Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away on July 21, 2004. His entire professional career was spent with the firm of Howard Needles Tammen and Bergendoff in Kansas City, culminating as chairman of the Executive Committee. 1950s Max S. Wortman, Jr., BSCE’56, Ames, Iowa, was recently elected an inaugural Fellow of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association. He was also awarded the Max S. Wortman, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award in Entrepreneurship by the U.S. Association of Small Business of Entrepreneurship, named after him and first awarded to him. He had recently received awards for supporting women and minorities and innovation in teaching. Max passed away on March 25, 2005. 1960s Luther E. Erickson, BSME’64, Stillwater, Minnesota, retired from 3M in October 2004 after 38 years of service. His last 11 years were focused on improving production processes and equipment as part of the engineering systems technology center. Clarence James “Jolly” Triska, BSEE’50/MSEE’56/PhDEE’61, Ames, Iowa, passed away on January 17, 2005. He had been employed by Autonetics, Hycon Manufacturing, and Marshall Engineering, all in California, before returning to Iowa State where he remained until his retirement in 1988. Richard G. Allen, AgE’74, Kimberly, Idaho, has been awarded the 2005 Arid Lands Hydraulic Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was recognized for his research on conjunctive management of groundwater and surface water, evapotranspiration, and irrigation systems operation and design in arid lands. He is currently a faculty member of the University of Idaho Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. 1970s Richard G. He had previously been employed by the Iowa Conservation Commission, the Iowa State University Coal Project, McDonnell-Douglas Electronics Company, and Digital Equipment Corporation. 1980s Lt. Col. Patrick Doherty, BSAerE’87, Goldsboro, North Carolina, recently received the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association. He is an F-15E pilot in the U.S. Air Force and has earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in Baghdad, which contributed to his being honored as the top F-15E combat pilot for 2003. Construction Engineering Reunion Bella Vista, Arkansas, was the site of a golfing reunion for construction engineering alumni on June 4 and 5, 2004. Tom Jellinger, the department’s first professor-in-charge, was honored at the event, where participants shared thoughts about the program’s future, and Jellinger, who joined the program in 1960, talked about how the program started.
