3M: above and beyond

Last April, 3M challenged its employees to raise $100,000 for Iowa State's new Engineering Teaching and Research Complex. To kick off the six-month campaign the 3M Foundation, the philanthropic arm of 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota, awarded $100,000 to the engineering college and pledged to match the employee contributions with $3 for every $1 raised up to the $100,000 goal. The 3M Foundation also agreed that any amount above the goal would be matched dollar for dollar.

3M's 360 ISU alumni responded by raising $280,000 and the Foundation matched that figure with $480,000 - bringing the total ETRC gift to $860,000. "I was surprised - pleasantly surprised - that we exceeded the original goal by so much," said Christine Pearson, BSChE'87, 3M employee and team leader of the company's ISU Focused College Relations Team. "This just goes to show the strong loyalty alums have for ISU."

Chris Curran, development officer for the college, said, "3M has been tremendously supportive both as a company and with the alumni employees. They have gone above and beyond what was expected, and that is encouraging."
