Keepsake photo revisited

When Edward M. Walsh, MSNucE'63, PhDEE'64, Limerick, Ireland, returned to campus last fall to receive an alumni award from the college, he had a special request. Walsh wanted to recreate a photo taken on top of ISU's teaching nuclear reactor, circa 1962.

Walsh, who recently retired from 26 years' service as president of the University of Limerick, saved the photo as a remembrance of his ISU days. He needs some help, however, remembering names of everyone pictured! From left, Seymour Raffety, MSNucE’60, PhDNucE’64, Dick Danofsky, BSNucE’55, MSNucE’60, PhDNucE’63, Walsh, (unidentified), Phil Loretan, MSNucE’63, PhDNucE’65, and (unidentified). If you know the names of those unidentified, please contact the Muses editor, 202 Marston Hall, ISU, Ames, Iowa 50011; tbarron@iastate.edu.

In the 1998 photo, Edward and Stephanie Walsh hold a copy of his thesis, "Economics of Nuclear Power for Iowa," and a prototype fuel assembly used for demonstrations. One of the first teaching reactors to be operated by a university in the U.S., the 150-ton reactor was operated from November 1959 until May 1998.
