University, college thrive in patent arena

Iowa State University ranked 14th nationally in royalties earned from licenses and patents in fiscal year 1997, according to the most current data available from the Association of University Technology Managers. Iowa State earned $6.9 million from its licenses and patents. Iowa State ranked seventh nationally in both the number of licenses generating royalties (186) and in the number of start-up companies (six) formed as a result of its technology transfer efforts. Faculty from the College of Engineering received 16 patents during FY 1997 and 24 during FY 1998.

Money generated from ISU royalties pays for the university’s technology transfer operations and for research in ISU colleges. It also goes to the inventors and supports smaller research projects at the university.
