Laura
Materials Engineering
Hometown: Ireton, IA
Best part of being an Iowa State
student: The campus.
I love walking across campus and seeing
people playing Frisbee on Central Campus or studying
out on the lawn in front of Alumni Hall.
It is beautiful in every season.
Why Materials Engineering:
One of the Materials Engineering
professors travels around doing demonstrations for
high schools.
After he visited my school I talked about it
for days. I knew I wanted to do that.
Dream Job:
I want to
work at a smaller company. My focus
would be on doing failure analysis and
helping to make our products the best on the
market.
Study Abroad:
I studied abroad the summer after my freshman year
in London.
It was an amazing experience.
I loved being able to watch the World Cup
with Europeans and getting to see all the sights in
London.
Clubs:
Material Advantage.
It has been a great networking tool to not
only meet people in my department, but also in the business world.
It has provided a great leadership experience
for me. Now I am the Outreach chair, so I get
to be the one now who gets to do the demonstrations
and tell everyone why I love Materials Engineering!
Advice to New Students:
Don’t base your opinion of engineering on the
general math and science classes.
Once you make it through those you’ll get to
the fun engineering classes specific to your major.
It may take some endurance, but it will
definitely be worth it in the end.
