Installing the Default Installation Software After you have specified the location of your installation medium (usually /CDROM/dist/ ), installing the default installation is usually a very straight forward task. You may choose to upgrade the software packages on the CD that are already installed on your machine, install new software packages on the CD, or both. Upgrading Software Packages If you are upgrading the software packages that are included on the CD, then you need to check the "Upgrade Products" checkbox in the center of the window by clicking it with your mouse button (this should already be checked for you). If you use this option, the Software Manager will scan all the software packages on the CD, and determine if you have a version of that package installed. If you do, and the version on the CD is more current, the Software Manager will install the most current version Installing New Software Packages If you wish to install software on the CD that is part of the default installation, but not yet installed on your machine, check the "New Products" checkbox by clicking it with your mouse button. Important Note: If you do not want to install new software packages, be certain this box is not checked.
And you're off! Once you have made those two choices, you should be ready to click the "Start" button on the Software Manager. (Click here if the "Conflicts" button is highlighted instead of the "Start" button). Once you click that button, the Software Manager will install the software, and let you know when it is finished. It may have special instructions for you after installing the software. For instance, some software disributions require you to reboot the machine after being installed (the Operating System is a good example of this!). After you have followed those instructions, you may either quit or install software off another CD. Finishing up Once you have installed the software off the CDs, be certain to return them to the person(s) you borrowed them from. If you obtained the CDs from Engineering Computing Support Services (ECSS), please return them to 210 Marston Hall. |
