We are the collegiate section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at Iowa State University
and we are busy preparing for another
exciting year of activities. Our section provides members with many opportunities
to develop professional skills to further their careers. In addition to professional
development activities, our section works to provide outreach events in the surrounding
areas that educate and expose students to engineering as a career option. While SWE
depends heavily on student volunteers and payment of dues, we need your help in order
to fully achieve our goals. This guide outlines the various ways your company may become
involved through sponsorship with the Iowa State University SWE Collegiate Section.
The broad scope of our organization allows your company to have a large exposure to a
diverse group of engineers. Events such as General Meetings, Fridays After Class, and
the Winter Banquet further the development and grant recognition of professional skills,
and allow networking with prospective engineers. By sponsoring a SWE event, your company
will benefit in the following ways:
- Encourage networking opportunities with both companies and students
- Receive name recognition of financial support for the Society and its programs
- Support diversity in the engineering and technology workface
- Promote the opportunities for professional and collegiate women in engineering and technology
We would like to thank you for taking the time to learn about our section.
If you have any questions or would like to sponsor any events hosted by the
Iowa State University Society of Women Engineers Collegiate Section, please
feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you and are
always open to ideas for new events or ways to improve our existing events to
better serve our sponsors!

Each January SWE invites 30 high school seniors to campus for an overnight visit. These girls have
been accepted into the college of engineering at Iowa State and are considering attending the following
fall. During this event the girls get a glimpse of both campus life and engineering. As a way to
remember the things they learn, the fun they have, and the friends they meet, the girls are given SWE

faculty interact. This provides a casual atmosphere for networking and interaction among students, faculty and company representatives. We encourage sponsors to send representatives to interact with students at this
networking event. The sponsorship of this event will help cover the cost of food and equipment rental.
Freshman SWE Sponsorship - $22 per student
SWE FY 11 - 2010 / 2011 School Year
Our newest drive to increase our student involvement in SWE is to sponsor all first year female
engineering students’ membership fees. These fees will be paid every fall. We will give your
company a discounted General Meeting ($50 discount) as a thank you for sponsoring these young women.
This meeting will give your company an opportunity to interact with the members that you have sponsored.
As a company, you have the opportunity to decide if you would like to sponsor a certain major or majors
of students. Your company will also receive contact information for these members, with their permission.
In addition to discounted General Meeting, we also invite you to a special dinner held the Sunday before
the Fall Engineering Career Fair. This dinner is intended to give you an opportunity to interact with
the women sponsored by your company.

conferences and what our members bring back with them makes a difference in the quality of our
programs and activities. Opportunities available to members that participate in the SWE Annual

The following events are outreach events. If there is an event that you are interested in, we would love
to schedule it for a time that is convient for your company's representatives to attend.
Engineering 001 - $200
Location: Preschools in Ames, Iowa
Attendees: 50 preschool students
This outreach event allows SWE members the opportunity to interact with preschoolers on and off
campus and to facilitate engineering activities. Activities held at these events provide
inspiration for the future generations of engineers. In the past, activities have included planting
seeds, which relates to environmental and agricultural engineering; making race cars out of
marshmallows and gumdrops, which relates to mechanical and aerospace engineering; and making play-dough,
which relates to chemical and materials engineering. Sponsorship will cover the supplies needed for
the activities.
Explore Engineering - $500
Location: Middle schools outside Ames, Iowa
Attendees: 100 middle school students
There is a large interest in science and math from middle school students in the towns surrounding Ames
that may not have as many opportunities to attend science nights facilitated by college students. Our
Explore Engineering events provide hands-on activities that will help spark the middle-schooler's interest
in science and math. It is important to introduce the field of engineering to middle school-age children
in order to encourage interest in the pursuit of engineering throughout high school and college. As a
company sponsor, you are encouraged to send representatives to lead one of the activities. Your company
sponsorship for this event will be used to offset the transportation costs for the SWE members as well as
the supplies and food needed for the event.
Engineering Your Future - $500
Location: High schools outside Ames, Iowa
Attendees: 30 high school students
Traditionally, high schools outside of Ames have not received as much outreach from Iowa State engineering
students as local districts. The goal of the Engineering Your Future events is to increase interaction with
high school students. These events will be similar to Explore Engineering, but slightly higher level hands-on
activities. There will be more focus on what engineers do and how to pursue engineering in college and as a
career. As a company sponsor, you are encouraged to send representatives to lead one of the activities. Your
company sponsorship for this event will be used to offset the transportation costs for the SWE members as well
as the supplies and food needed for the event.
