Standards and Benchmarks

 

Goals:

        To expose students to educational LEGO® kits for younger children

 

Real World Applications:

            Towers & Bridges -Bridges, buildings

            Primary Simple Machines- clocks, cars, cranes, scales

 

  Towers and Bridges

 

1.      After you receive your Duplo Towers and Bridges  kit, spend approximately 15-20 minutes just exploring with the kit and its different pieces. How are these Legos different than the smaller Legos?

 

2.       Think of at least two concepts or ideas that you could teach with this kit.  In addition, what are different subject areas that you could incorporate Duplos-be creative.  Discuss and share your ideas with your partner.

 

3.       Your group will be given the building instructions and the “Notes for the Teacher” instruction cards.  Look through these and compare the ideas given to those you and your partner shared. 

 

4.       Build the strongest bridge you can.  Only the LEGO® elements in your kit can be used for this task.  The minimum length for the bridge is 18 studs, the minimum width for the bridge must be 4 studs, and the bridge must have a minimum clearance of 4 inches (approximately 5 Duplo® blocks). Weights can be used to test how much your bridge can hold.  Your bridge must hold a certain amount of weight (weight amount will be given to you before you begin.)

 

5.       Inventory your kit with the inventory sheet attached to the lid and return it.

 

Primary Simple Machines

 

1.        Repeat Steps 1-3 of the Bridges and Towers kit. 

2.       Build the device on Simple Machines Card 1b. The device shown in the larger picture is started for you, you must finish the device to resemble the smaller picture located in the righter upper corner of Card 1b.

3.       Discuss how you might use a project like this in your class with your partner.

4.       Inventory your kit with the inventory sheet attached to the lid and return it.
